I am writing this from the State Capitol in Tallahassee. My granddaughter was invited by our wonderful State Representative Martin David Kiar to serve as a Page on the floor of the State House and I am accompanying her. I am also grateful to Coral Springs representative Ari Abraham Porth for making me feel so comfortable hanging out in his office while Emma was on the floor. What a wonderful experience for both of us.
Emma, of course, is in awe about what she is seeing around her and the debates she has been hearing. Her first day here, she got to hear the debate about teaching of "Intelligent Design" (the alternative to the theory of evolution) in the schools and that bill was passed and then she got to see a tribute to ALS, which was the disease her papa (my husband) suffered.
I, on the other hand, am getting an opportunity to see first hand how one sided things are here and how our Democratic elected officials have to fight for every gain. My respect and admiration for our State Reps has increased two fold.
My determination to see that our House becomes more and more Democratic has as well. My support of our State Representatives has become that much more intense.
I am getting to see first hand that we are the good guys.
We need to stay on the front lines to defeat that other group....the one that is taking the State of Florida backwards. I feel like I am going back to the early 1900's when I watch the Republican legislators.
Our own dynamic Representative Kiar will be addressing us at our next meeting to give us a first hand look at the way things are going. I look forward to seeing you all there.
Fondly,
Ann
